Podiatry - Athletes Foot and Fungal Infections

Itchy, peeling skin between the toes? Redness, burning, or a stubborn rash that just won’t go away? You could be dealing with a common condition called Athlete’s Foot — a fungal skin infection that affects thousands of Australians every year.

Despite the name, you don’t need to be an athlete to get it. It can affect anyone — especially if your feet spend a lot of time in warm, moist environments like sweaty shoes or communal showers.

Athletes Foot & Fungal Infections - how can our Podiatrists can help

What Is Athlete’s Foot?

Athlete’s Foot (medically known as tinea pedis) is a fungal infection that usually starts between the toes. It’s caused by dermatophytes — the same group of fungi responsible for fungal nail infections and ringworm.

The fungi thrive in warm, damp conditions and are easily spread in public places such as gyms, swimming pools, and change rooms.

Common Symptoms Include:

  • Itching, burning or stinging between the toes

  • Redness or flaky skin

  • Cracking, peeling or scaling, especially on the soles

  • Blistering or oozing in more severe cases

How Does It Spread?

Athlete’s Foot is contagious. It spreads through direct skin-to-skin contact or indirectly through contaminated surfaces, socks, towels or shoes. If left untreated, the infection can spread to other parts of the foot, or even to the toenails, where it becomes harder to treat.

How Podiatrists Can Help

If you suspect you’ve got Athlete’s Foot or another fungal infection, seeing a podiatrist is a smart move. Here’s how we manage it:

  • Accurate diagnosis: Not all rashes are fungal. We’ll assess the skin and confirm the cause so you’re not wasting time (or money) on the wrong treatment.

  • Treatment plan: We’ll recommend the most effective antifungal treatments — whether topical creams, sprays or powders — and advise on how and when to apply them.

  • Prevention strategies: We help you stop it from coming back by addressing footwear hygiene, recommending breathable socks and shoes, and giving practical tips for keeping feet dry.

Don't Ignore It

Mild cases might settle with over-the-counter creams, but persistent or recurring infections often need professional attention. And if you have diabetes or a weakened immune system, it's especially important to treat fungal infections early.
